Coach Michael Allen took over the Maranatha High girls' basketball team just before the season started, guiding them from a history of losses to a promising playoff appearance. Despite facing the personal tragedy of losing his home to a fire, Allen found motivation and community support, which has been pivotal for the team. After a season of hard work and a remarkable series of game wins, including a memorable double overtime victory, the team secured their spot in the playoffs, symbolizing resilience and hope for the community.
The team went 0-8 in league play last season and hasn’t been to the playoffs since the 2018-19 season. Allen, however, stepped in as head coach with no prior experience.
"It was nice to have a positive outcome. Seeing it in our seniors' eyes, you can see how much this girls' program has been through," Allen shared after the triumphant playoff win.
"The night I lost our house was a breakthrough game for us," he reflected, highlighting the emotional and pivotal moments surrounding their transformation and loyalty.
“It’s been something to distract us. It speaks to the heart of our community. Altadena/Pasadena have some of the most resilient people,” said Allen.
