Following a controversial incident involving a Palmdale deputy and a Black woman, Deputy Timothy Gardner has claimed wrongful termination after he was fired for allegedly punching a woman during a traffic stop to protect her baby. He argues that racial bias was involved in his dismissal, as he asserts his actions were aimed at saving the child from harm. The Sheriff’s Department has not publicly commented on the ongoing legal matters, whilst the deputy's union has defended his actions as commendable and necessary in a dangerous situation.
"Deputy Gardner saved a baby when the suspect was threatening to break the baby's legs. If Deputy Gardner were not white, he would not have been terminated."
"The conduct of the involved deputies was objectively reasonable," the county's lawyers wrote in their legal response two years ago, adding that the "deputies were acting in self-defense and defense of others."
"The LASD administration, with little understanding of the circumstances, fired Deputy Gardner for his decisive action in rescuing a three-week-old child from the aggressive grip of an irate suspect resisting arrest," union Vice President Thomas Ferguson told The Times.
