Column: City Section basketball favorites: It's down to Westchester, Chatsworth and Cleveland
Briefly

Cleveland's high school basketball team has transformed its play with the introduction of junior Serigne Deme, a 6-foot-8 transfer who made an immediate impact. After an overtime victory against Chatsworth, Cleveland's strategy shifted to utilizing the lob, allowing them to assert dominance in the league. The City Section now sees Cleveland, alongside Westchester and Chatsworth, vying for the championship. Players like Tajh Ariza from Westchester face challenges adjusting to the physicality of the game. Coach Dewitt Cotton emphasizes the importance of consistency and contribution from all players as playoffs approach.
"He's a big help and the missing piece we've needed for a long time," Cleveland 6-6 junior Cayden Kelly said. "We've always had great guards but needed a big to help us secure rebounds and block shots."
Coach Dewitt Cotton understands his team's inconsistency. In a game against Palisades, the Comets gave up 19 consecutive points in the first quarter before rallying for victory.
Suddenly, the favorites, Chatsworth and Westchester, must deal with Cleveland, which is 18-4 and holding down first place in the West Valley League before a Feb. 10 rematch against Chatsworth.
