The U.S. Department of Justice has initiated an investigation into the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for potential violations of Second Amendment rights due to excessive fees and prolonged wait times for concealed carry permits. The probe follows a lawsuit highlighting an 18-month delay in obtaining these licenses, suggesting systemic issues affecting others in the region. California has been described as an "egregious offender" resisting recent Supreme Court rulings favoring Second Amendment rights. The Sheriff’s Department attributes delays to inadequate staffing and application backlogs.
"This Department of Justice will not stand idly by while States and localities infringe on the Second Amendment rights of ordinary, law-abiding Americans," said Bondi in a statement about the LASD investigation.
The DOJ announced Thursday afternoon that it was opening an investigation into the Sheriff's Department's possible abuse of 2nd Amendment rights, part of a broader review of restrictive firearms-related laws in California.
