Ten beaches, including popular spots near Santa Monica Pier and Mother's Beach, showed poor water quality grades due to sewage spills from urbanization and heavy rain flushing pollutants during dry periods.
Despite 89% of California beaches having good water quality in warm months, only 66% received top grades during dry periods, with 38 million gallons of sewage flowing into ocean and coastal waterways.
