The Altadena community is grappling with the aftermath of the Eaton fire, which has left significant destruction. Many residents are hesitant about the future, as homes are boarded up, and the toxic smell of smoke persists. The local sentiment captures a longing to preserve the neighborhood's unique character amid challenges posed by potential heavy regulation of rebuilding. With some residents contemplating leaving and properties being sold, the community faces an uncertain future that threatens its unique spirit and history.
"The landscape around the area is just decimated. We don't know if that's going to be looking that way for the next two or three, four, five, 10 years," Loudermilk, 54, said.
"Everyone loved Altadena in his or her own way, but the wildness of it and the freedom of it is something that is deeply important to people," said Hans Allhoff, the chair of Altadena Heritage.
