The Los Angeles area experienced a 3.4-magnitude earthquake shortly after a 4.7-magnitude tremor, marking a notably active seismic year.
According to the USGS, Thursday's earthquake was the 14th of magnitude 4 or greater in 2023, surpassing the previous record set in 1988.
Seismologist Lucy Jones noted that while 2023 has seen increased seismic activity, it's too early to determine whether it's statistically significant.
Earthquakes typically range in damage; those between 2.5 and 5.4 are felt but rarely cause significant harm, according to experts.
