Santa Ynez Reservoir in Palisades must be drained again after more leaks found
Briefly

Los Angeles city officials aimed to restore the Santa Ynez Reservoir to service by early May after it had been empty since January due to cover tears. A recent refill revealed further leaks, necessitating additional repairs and pushing the reopening date to mid- to late June. Residents expressed frustration over the reservoir's emptiness during a catastrophic wildfire in January, prompting safety concerns and a formal investigation. Despite challenges, officials assure that neighborhood water supply remains operational and compliant with safety standards during the repair period.
'While this development is a frustrating setback, we are working as quickly as possible with the contractor to return Santa Ynez Reservoir to service,' said Anselmo Collins.
Collins said that the water supply to the neighborhood is 'safe and strong,' with water resources for firefighting boosted by the Encino reservoir and a network of 'full and operational' storage tanks.
The delay adds to the frustration and fury of Palisades residents, who have questioned why a large reservoir tucked in a canyon above much of the neighborhood was empty.
DWP confirmed Wednesday that the reservoir will have to be drained again so that crews can fix the floating cover.
