The recent wildfires have displaced many residents in Los Angeles County, leading some landlords to engage in illegal price gouging by raising rents exorbitantly. The L.A. County Board of Supervisors has responded by increasing civil penalties for such actions, raising them from $10,000 to $50,000 per violation. The board also aims to tackle algorithmic rental pricing tactics employed by corporate landlords, which contribute to rising rents. The Department of Consumer and Business Affairs reported a surge in complaints and identified over 2,800 cases of rent gouging since the wildfires started.
As the market continues to use these algorithms, it is feeding into the increases, said DCBA director Rafael Carbajal.
Unless we prosecute and put landlords in jail for this, they won't be stopped,
