Recent rainfall in Southern California has both alleviated fire conditions and heightened risks of mudflows and toxic ash runoff in areas recently impacted by wildfires. Meteorologists warned of rapid runoff in burn areas, with flood watches issued due to susceptibility after fresh burns. Los Angeles International Airport recorded under an inch of rain, leading to school closures in Malibu and road closures due to mudflows. While the rain presents hazards, it aids firefighting responses against multiple ongoing wildfires that had previously wreaked havoc in the region, leading to significant devastation and losses.
All these fresh burns are very susceptible to rapid runoff. What that means is we have a fairly high danger of mud and debris flows once we get above those thresholds.
One benefit that could come from the rain: It may help firefighters who are reining in multiple wildfires after weeks of windy and dry weather.
School was closed Monday for the four Malibu schools in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District due to dangerous road conditions and challenges with access to our schools.
