On March 4, 2023, officers from the Mammoth Lakes Police Department fatally shot Jesus Corona Uribe, who was reportedly throwing rocks at vehicles near a library. Upon arrival, officers found Uribe armed with rocks and non-compliant. He allegedly charged at the officers, which led to the shooting. The incident marks the police department's first shooting since its inception in 1986, and an investigation by the California Department of Justice has been initiated as per legal protocols surrounding police use of lethal force.
The California Department of Justice is now investigating the killing as required by state law anytime a member of law enforcement kills an unarmed person.
Mammoth Lakes police Chief Dan Casabian declined to provide more information about the shooter but did say that a body-worn video would likely be released in the next two weeks.
