An unusual weather pattern known as the 'Omega block' is expected to cause extended warmth in certain areas and steady rain in others across the US this May. The Omega block disrupts typical weather making rain prevalent in the Southwest, southern Plains, and Gulf Coast while also affecting the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. Heavy rainfall of 3-6 inches is anticipated, increasing flood risks for communities already saturated after recent rains. Forecasters warn of possible severe thunderstorms and significant flooding threats for over 35 million people in the southern US.
Plenty of moisture will be underneath those lows," FOX Weather Meteorologist Jane Minar said. "It's a slow-moving pattern that will kind of keep us locked in place with rain.
NOAA's Weather Prediction Center warned that the highest flood risk is expected from Tuesday evening through early Wednesday, with over 35 million people under Level 2 to Level 3 flash flood threats.
