California Governor Gavin Newsom welcomed President Donald Trump during his visit to assess wildfire damage in Los Angeles. Despite not being invited, Newsom and Trump interacted amicably, exchanging greetings and expressing gratitude for mutual support during crises like COVID-19. Tensions, however, remained as Trump had earlier threatened to withhold federal aid unless his conditions—such as California's water storage policies—were met. While they discussed pressing issues, neither candidate addressed the contentious relationship regarding the wildfires during the press conference that followed their meeting.
I appreciate the governor coming out and meeting me, Gavin, very much, Trump said. And we will be talking a little bit. Most importantly, thank you for being here, Newsom responded.
Trump threatened to withhold aid for California if his conditions for federal funding were not met earlier in the day. One of those conditions is that California store more water for emergencies.
