Nearly half of L.A.'s record homelessness budget went unspent, city controller finds
Briefly

Controller Kenneth Mejia found that only $599 million had actually been spent out of nearly $1.3 billion allocated for homelessness, attributing the underspending to inefficiencies such as insufficient staff, resources, and obsolete technology.
Mejia reported that only about 30% of the $262 million in state grants and 58% of the $267-million budget for the Inside Safe program had been spent or encumbered, highlighting systemic issues.
A spokesman for Mayor Bass defended her administration, asserting that the mayor is executing a prudent strategy that balances immediate spending with long-term solutions to reduce homelessness.
The City Administrative Office raised questions about the Controller's findings, noting that some funds designated as unspent include multiyear grants and expenditures which were not factored into the Controller's analysis.
