Matthew Stafford has been sidelined due to a back issue and has not participated in practice since training camp began. Coach Sean McVay initially planned for Stafford to return during the first padded practice, but these plans changed without a specific reason given. McVay expressed no concerns regarding Stafford's situation and emphasized the importance of being cautious with a player of his caliber. As the team prepares for their season opener against the Houston Texans, Jimmy Garoppolo will continue to lead the first-team reps.
Matthew Stafford observed practice for the first time on Saturday, but the Rams star quarterback will remain sidelined at least another week because of a back issue.
McVay said on Tuesday that Stafford would sit out the first block of practices, but return on Monday when the Rams will be in pads for the first time.
"I don't have any reason to be concerned, based on the information that's been given," McVay said. "And with that being said I don't think we can be smart enough with somebody like Matthew..."
Jimmy Garoppolo will continue to take first-team reps as the Rams prepare for their Sept. 7 opener against the Houston Texans.
