A 66-year-old resident of Angeles National Forest faces several felony charges after allegedly threatening five hikers with a sledgehammer during a January incident. The man reportedly told the group to leave his property while swinging the weapon at them. More recently, he obstructed a hiker's exit from Dry Lake Canyon, where he assaulted her with sticks and a branch. He was arrested on May 16 and found with a knife. Currently held at the Los Angeles County Men's Central Jail, he is scheduled for a court appearance on June 2.
The charges stem from a Jan. 12 incident, when the man was accused of swinging a sledgehammer at three men and two women while they were in the forest, the outlet reported.
Ondatje told the Valley Tribune that the woman tried to get through three times, while the man allegedly threw sticks at her and stood over her with a large branch after she fell.
The man allegedly told the group to get off his property as he was also hitting trees.
The man was arrested at 4:30 p.m. that day and is being held at the Los Angeles County Men's Central Jail on $295,000 bail.
