Luna faces off against ex-Sheriff Villanueva in crowded primary rematch
Robert Luna, Los Angeles County Sheriff, seeks a second term after unseating Alex Villanueva in 2022. Villanueva is again running, along with six other candidates, including Eric Strong, who placed third in the 2022 primary. If no candidate wins a majority in the primary, the top two vote-getters will meet in a runoff on Nov. 3. The Luna-Villanueva matchup mirrors 2022, when Luna won with more than 61% of the vote. No public polling has been released for this year’s race, but a quality of life survey of 1,400 residents found Luna’s favorability at 48%, up from 37% in 2023, while unfavorability remained steady. Favorability was higher among Latinos than whites.
"Luna worked for the Long Beach Police Department for 36 years, including a seven-year stint as its first Latino chief, before winning election to helm the nation's largest sheriff's department in 2022."
