Former Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristen Crowley's appeal to reverse her dismissal from Mayor Karen Bass was unsuccessful, falling short in reinstating her after being blamed for shortcomings during a devastating wildfire. The City Council backed Bass, who cited issues with Crowley's leadership during the crisis, including her inability to deploy an additional 1,000 firefighters. Crowley rebutted claims of refusing to prepare a critical report on the incident, attributing her limitations to budget cuts affecting equipment availability.
Bass fired Crowley on Feb. 21, six weeks after the fire started. She praised Crowley in the firefighting effort's early going, but she said she later learned that an additional 1,000 firefighters could have been deployed on the day the blaze ignited.
In her first extended comments since being dismissed, Crowley told the council Tuesday that she was the victim of "multiple false accusations." She said she never refused to participate in the follow-up report on the fire.
