Los Angeles County announced a historic $4 billion settlement addressing nearly 7,000 sexual abuse claims in juvenile facilities dating back to 1959. This agreement follows a California law enacted in 2020, allowing victims to pursue claims regardless of previous statutes of limitations. Many allegations relate to the now-closed MacLaren children's center. While the settlement offers a form of justice and closure for victims, officials acknowledge the deep, lasting scars of the abuse, emphasizing a commitment to accountability and reform within the systems meant to protect children.
On behalf of the county, I apologize wholeheartedly to everyone who was harmed by these reprehensible acts, Fesia Davenport, the county's chief executive, said in a statement.
It is bittersweet for the survivors, because nothing is ever going to take away what was done to them, and how badly their lives were altered... said Adam Slater, one of the plaintiffs' attorneys.
