Bobby Bradford, a 91-year-old free-jazz musician, lost his long-time home in Altadena to the Eaton fire. Despite the devastation, he remains active in music, showing resilience and determination. He is temporarily living in his fifth rental while trying to rebuild his life and has been supported by fundraising efforts. At the Hammer Museum, he will present original compositions inspired by Jackie Robinson, reflecting themes of perseverance amid hardship. He misses his previous home and the vibrant community of artists around him.
"That's all I have left," Bradford said, pulling his horn out of its case to practice for the afternoon. "I'm [91] years old. I don't have years to wait around to rebuild."
At 91, he never imagined starting his life over again in tiny rented apartments, with decades of memories in cinders. Despite it all, he's still playing music.
