In Sacramento, Mayor Bass seeks state money to close nearly $1-billion budget gap
Briefly

Mayor Karen Bass visited Sacramento to seek financial assistance for Los Angeles, facing a budget deficit of nearly $1 billion. This trip marks her second in two months as she navigates the economic challenges alongside state leaders. The city plans significant layoffs, cutting over 2,700 positions due to soaring personnel costs, partly stemming from the financial impacts of the January wildfires. Bass emphasized the necessity of reinforcing city-state relationships, especially given the lack of Southern California representation in the Legislature during these challenging financial times.
This is Bass' second visit to the state Capitol in as many months - a homecoming of sorts for a former Assembly speaker who helped navigate the state's 2009 budget crisis.
It's very, very important that we solidify those relationships, Bass said Wednesday, restating the importance of keeping the city's issues front and center, even while state legislators fend off their own budgetary crises.
