Teoscar Hernández, the reigning Home Run Derby champion, has opted out of participating in this year's event during All-Star weekend due to health concerns following a strained groin that kept him on the injured list. Although he initially considered defending his title, he decided against competing, prioritizing his well-being. Hernández, who has become a prominent player with the Dodgers, expressed hope about possibly returning to the competition next season. Currently, he ranks second in All-Star voting among National League outfielders.
"With the injury that I had earlier this year, I don't want to risk anything. So I'm going to stay put and not participate," Hernández said.
Initially considering competing, the reigning champion ultimately decided against it to prioritize his health after a groin strain that led to two weeks on the injured list.
Hernández became the first Dodgers player to win the derby last season, hitting 49 home runs and defeating Bobby Witt Jr. in the final.
Although he’s not competing this season, Hernández continues to perform well, having a strong showing in the current season with the Dodgers.
