Conan O'Brien had to cut Oscars 2025 sketch because of this Academy rule: 'Blew my mind'
Briefly

Conan O'Brien shared insights about his experience hosting the Oscars in 2025 during a podcast episode featuring head writer Mike Sweeney. They discussed several humorous sketches that had been cut, including a scene imagining O'Brien arguing with a giant Oscar statue. Despite the comedic potential, the Academy rejected these ideas, emphasizing their rigid rules regarding the Oscar's portrayal, insisting it remained unadorned and upright at all times. O'Brien reflected on these restrictions, showcasing the creative struggles faced by hosts while trying to bring humor to the prestigious event.
We're fighting about things couples fight about,' O'Brien explained of the scrapped skit. 'At one point, I thought wouldn't it be great if it's just on the couch? Let's lay it on a really big couch and I'll be vacuuming and say, 'Could you at least lift your feet? Or could you at least get up and help? Load the dishwasher?'.
One of the people from the Academy came forward and said, 'Oscar can never be horizontal.' And that blew my mind. Like, wow, this is like the thigh bone of St. Peter.
We wanted to do it and they just said, 'No, no no, that can't happen,' O'Brien said of the Academy.
No clothing on Oscar. Oscar is always naked,' O'Brien said the organization told him.
