Asian communities faced language barriers during L.A. wildfires, UCLA study says
Briefly

A recent UCLA study highlights that Asian communities in fire-affected zones of Los Angeles County struggled with emergency information due to language barriers. Among approximately 50,000 Asian immigrants in the affected evacuation zones, over 12,000 require language assistance. The study reveals inadequate multilingual communication compared to the 15% Asian demographic in those areas. Community leader Manjusha Kulkarni notes that residents reported missing critical updates because alerts were primarily in English and Spanish, prompting their group to create a multilingual resource guide to aid affected families.
These language needs are part of a broader challenge in Los Angeles County, where over half a million Asian Americans are classified as Limited English Proficiency.
We put together a resource guide that was in multiple languages on our own because we saw nobody else was doing it.
