Caitlin Maestrini created Teak New York, a Scandinavian design store, to fulfill her desire for authentic Nordic furniture. Her Brooklyn apartment, once cold and unfinished, is now a reflection of Scandinavian aesthetics, embracing the principles of coziness known as hygge. Through curated furnishings from Danish brands, Caitlin adds warmth and depth to her home, which was previously styled with basic, unadorned apartment amenities. She emphasizes the careful selection of furniture that not only looks beautiful but also tells a story, allowing her to cultivate the perfect comfort-filled living space.
Before I moved in, the apartment was really cold and simple. The developer of the building was going for an 'industrial' look by not finishing off some of the surfaces and leaving exposed concrete.
The home is inspired by Scandinavian design principles and aesthetics. I incorporated popular Danish brands like Montana Furniture and OMHU; I sought out pieces that are not easily accessible in the United States.
I always have blankets, pillows, books, and candles nearby no matter the season. When I first started discovering Scandinavian design, I was under the impression that it had to be gray and neutral, but now I've grown to understand the style better.
I focus on the craftsmanship of my furniture, ensuring that each piece tells a story and serves a purpose in achieving the perfect hygge home.
