People are having more twins. How can we make births safer? DW 03/24/2025
Briefly

The growth in twin births worldwide, particularly in low-income countries, poses significant healthcare challenges. Despite an overall increase due to population growth, regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia show alarming trends. Susie Lee from the Max Planck Institute emphasizes the need for better maternal healthcare, stating that the survival prospects for twins must improve. The study indicates that higher twin birth rates in countries like Nigeria, where one in every hundred pregnancies is twins, compound the risks of maternal and infant mortality, stressing urgent healthcare access for mothers, especially in rural areas.
"An important task remains to ensure that these twins can survive their early life as often as singletons do," said Susie Lee from the Max Planck Institute.
"Eighty percent of all twin births also occur in Asia and Africa, where mortality rates are high," highlighting the urgent healthcare needs for expectant mothers in these regions.
