Marks & Spencer pauses online orders as firm struggles with cyber-attack fallout
Briefly

Marks & Spencer has temporarily stopped all online orders due to a cyber-attack, working with cybersecurity experts to manage the situation. Despite the inconvenience, customers can still shop in physical locations using cash or card. The attack caused disruptions in contactless payment systems and affected inventory collection in stores since Monday. Although shares dipped 4% following the announcement, M&S reassured customers that their personal details remain secure. The halt in online orders comes before a peak sales weekend, likely impacting clothing and outdoors equipment sales positively.
The company apologised to shoppers for this inconvenience and paused digital orders as part of our proactive management of a cyber incident.
M&S said customers did not need to take any action, indicating that their details had not been accessed.
Shares in the retailer fell by as much as 4% on Friday after the announcement, before easing to close 2.3% down.
However, there was a separate technical problem on the Saturday of the busy Easter weekend that affected only contactless payments.
