Lesley Lokko has launched the Nomadic African Studio under her African Futures Institute, aimed at reshaping architectural education for young practitioners in Africa. This program, inspired by her experience with the Biennale College Architettura, will include fully funded, month-long studios spread across Africa, centered on themes relevant to societal issues such as cultural identity, migration, and climate change. The first studio will take place in Fez, Morocco, beginning in July 2025, designed for participants under 35, fostering an experimental and collaborative learning environment.
Lokko emphasizes the Nomadic African Studio as an empowering educational initiative, aiming to transform architectural education with a focus on cultural identity and equity. The studios will be fully funded, allowing young architects to deeply engage in critical issues.
The program seeks to bridge the gap between architectural practices from the Global North and South, responding to pressing challenges like climate change and public health through a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach.
