Harrods is the latest UK retailer to suffer from a cyber attack, following incidents at Marks and Spencer and Co-op. The attack has disrupted customer payments, prompting Harrods to restrict internet access at its locations while maintaining store operations. The spokesperson noted that their IT security team is actively addressing the vulnerabilities. Speculation arises that these attacks could be connected, potentially stemming from a compromised third-party retail services partner, linked with the criminal group Scattered Spider deploying ransomware.
"We recently experienced attempts to gain unauthorised access to some of our systems," said a Harrods spokesperson. "Our seasoned IT security team immediately took proactive steps to keep systems safe and as a result we have restricted internet access at our sites today."
This has led weight to growing speculation that all three attacks may share a common link, with the most plausible scenario suggesting a common third-party retail services partner.
