A report highlights the London Violence Reduction Unit's successful youth diversion scheme, which has managed to help 90% of 10- to 17-year-olds avoid reoffending after their release. Funded by the VRU, youth workers engage directly in custody centers to prevent future violence, asserting that the £40 million cost is justified by the considerable savings from reduced youth violence. The report coincides with rising public health concerns over knife crime and claims initiatives in hospitals and police custody can effectively lower risks of further violent behavior.
Lib Peck, the director of the London VRU, emphasized that the £40m yearly cost of the unit is offset by the savings from reduced reoffending rates, urging for a greater focus on prevention.
The scheme has shown that almost 90% of teenagers arrested for violent offences do not reoffend in the next 12 months after receiving support from youth workers.
