The lift at North Woolwich has been out of order for almost three years, limiting accessibility. The Royal Borough of Greenwich and Newham Council manage the tunnel and share maintenance costs. Repair costs have escalated, requiring 180,000 from each council. Newham councillor Sarah Ruiz stated repairs could conclude within the next year, although previous expectations projected January 2025 for completion. Greenwich Council is currently waiting for Newham to finalize necessary agreement before work can begin, despite both councils expressing commitment to share costs.
The lift in North Woolwich has been out of order for almost three years, making it only accessible by stairs. The Royal Borough of Greenwich and Newham Council own the tunnel, contributing to its maintenance. The lift on the North Woolwich side has not operated since August 2022, with repair costs not covered by normal funding.
Last year, the Royal Borough of Greenwich expected the lift to be operational by January 2025. However, Newham councillor Sarah Ruiz indicated that completion would occur sometime within the next year.
Both councils agreed to share repair costs, reported to be 180,000 each in July 2024. Despite this agreement, an update suggested Greenwich Council was still waiting for Newham to sign a funding agreement.
A spokesperson from Greenwich Council noted that the Woolwich Foot Tunnel is open 24/7 but expressed apologies for the ongoing issues with the lift, which requires specialist maintenance.
