Wildlife campaigners in south-east London have reported an alarming increase in catapult attacks on waterfowl, raising concerns over a potential culture of violence among youth. Rae Gellel, founder of the Greenwich Wildlife Network, highlighted severe injuries caused to birds, some of which are unable to be rescued and die painfully. The situation has escalated since the disbandment of the Met Police’s Central Wildlife Crime Unit. Gellel advocates for a stronger police presence and accountability measures for parents to protect vulnerable wildlife from these violent acts.
"It's really rare to get through a day without a report of something happening," Rae Gellel, founder of the Greenwich Wildlife Network, told The Standard.
"She fears the emergence of a growing culture of this type of violence, with children treating it almost like a sport."
