A defamation settlement application was brought in Wicklow Circuit Civil Court by William Connors, represented by his mother Kathleen Connors, against Obeliskvale Limited trading as Eddie Rockets. The case concerned a minor and asked the court to determine whether a proposed settlement was fair and in the child’s best interests. Counsel stated the incident occurred in June 2024 at Eddie Rockets in Arklow, when a server approached the child and asked whether he would pay a €90 bill from the previous week in front of friends and other patrons. The child denied owing the bill, and the server accepted this. The mother later contacted the restaurant and solicitors, and a €10,500 offer was accepted. Judge Patrick Quinn approved the settlement and ordered payment of legal costs, including counsel’s fees.
"Counsel for the minor, Conor Rubalcava, stated that the settlement arose from an incident in June 2024 at Eddie Rockets in Arklow. He said that, while his client was at the restaurant, a server approached him and asked: "Are you going to pay your €90 bill from last week?", while he was in the presence of friends and other patrons of the restaurant."
"However, Mr Connors told the server that they must be mistaken, which the worker accepted, before Connors returned home and informed his mother. She later contacted Eddie Rockets and the instructing solicitors, Benville and Robinson. An offer of €10,500 was subsequently accepted by Ms Connors on behalf of her son."
"The application related to a defamation matter involving a minor, with the court asked to rule on whether the proposed settlement was fair and in the best interests of the child. Judge Patrick Quinn approved the settlement and ruled that legal costs, including counsel's fees, were also to be paid."
