The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the death of a 45-year-old man who died in a Metropolitan Police custody suite in east London. The man was arrested on March 31 and was set to appear in court on April 2. He was found unresponsive during a routine check on April 2, and CPR was attempted but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The IOPC is reviewing CCTV and body-worn footage, and a post-mortem examination has been completed as part of the investigation process.
We have now met with his family to explain our role and have advised them of the next steps.
Our thoughts are with the man's family and friends, and all those affected by his death.
It's important that an independent investigation is carried out to fully establish the circumstances when someone has died in police custody.
Investigators from the watchdog have obtained CCTV footage from the custody suite and body-worn footage from the arresting officers, which is currently being reviewed.
