"a significant blow"
"Restricting access to trains and the Tube would confine many of us to our homes, making London's vast and culturally diverse landscape inaccessible,"
"The social isolation that many seniors already battle could deepen, and life's simple joys and necessities could become major logistical challenges."
Almost 60,000 people have signed a petition opposing proposed limits to the Older Person's Freedom Pass. The pass allows those aged 66 and over free travel on buses, the Tube, trams, DLR, London Overground, the Elizabeth line and most National Rail services in London. The scheme currently costs London boroughs almost £333m and is expected to rise to around £372m in 2026–27. London Councils proposed a review that could restrict free travel to buses only, which documents estimate would save councils more than £100m annually. Most other English concessionary schemes cover buses only. Transport for London operates a separate 60+ Oyster card for people aged 60–65.
