Thousands of children fail to secure place at first-choice secondary school in London
Briefly

In London, the success rate for first-choice school applications rose to 71.6%, but overall applications decreased, leading to 24,835 students missing out on their preferences. While popular state schools were anticipated to see a surge in applications due to VAT on private school fees, data from the Pan-London Admissions Board revealed no significant impact. However, admission rates slipped notably in central boroughs, including Westminster and Kensington, while Barking and Dagenham reported high first-choice success at over 87% for applicants.
The proportion of applications that are successful increased to 71.6%, with 62,677 out of 87,512 receiving offers for their first-choice school in London.
Despite speculation that increased demand for state schools would occur due to VAT on private school fees, the admissions scheme showed no significant impact on application rates.
