Olympic champion Sir Steve Redgrave is collaborating with conservationists to demand immediate measures against pollution in the Thames, where young rowers are competing. He delivered a letter to the Environment Department (Defra) seeking action against water companies discharging raw sewage. Despite past promises, pollution remains high, harming both rowers and the river's health. River Action, alongside British Rowing and the Rivers Trust, has created guidelines to mitigate health risks for rowers. Redgrave emphasizes that this issue impacts all river users, not just athletes, and insists on urgent changes for public health and environmental protection.
We should not have to worry about being ill whenever we train or compete on our rivers but the reality is that water companies continue to pump raw sewage into our rivers, turning what should be a natural lifeline into an open sewer.
The safety guidelines would help people stay safe, but that the situation was completely unacceptable. We need urgent action to stop sewage discharges and protect the health of everyone using our rivers.
