Holly, now living in Texas, recently reunited with the surgeons who performed her life-saving operation as a conjoined twin at Great Ormond Street Hospital 40 years ago. Her mother was told about her conjoined birth in 1985, leading to an emergency surgery that separated Holly from her twin Carly. Despite this significant medical feat, Carly sadly died shortly afterward. Since then, Great Ormond Street has treated numerous cases of conjoined twins, showcasing the hospital's pioneering role in such surgeries. Holly expressed immense gratitude for the medical team, emphasizing the challenges faced during that era of medicine.
Holly expressed her gratitude to the surgeons saying, "I truly am alive because of them and I know it was a whole different world 40 years ago, and things were quite new in this realm, but God bless them for having the knowledge and the ability."
Prof Spitz reminisced about the challenge, stating, "When we started we had ultrasound but no CT, no MRI and so we were going in blind, we just had to do the operation."
Mr Kiely reflected on the operation, saying, "At the time it was new, but it was actually just a major operation and we were doing lots of major operations so I wouldn't say we were overwhelmed..."
Mr Kiely added, "...but we were very aware that two babies were at risk."
