A group of activists in Camden, London, launched a divestment campaign against companies linked to Israel due to the conflict in Gaza. Despite gathering over 4,200 signatures on their petition, the local council did not act to divest its pension funds, instead referring the matter to a Pension Committee. Subsequently, the council has banned demonstrations in its meetings, a move seen as an attempt to control pro-Palestine activists. Campaigners assert their commitment to ongoing advocacy for Palestinian solidarity and accountability from the council.
"Our solidarity with the people of Palestine is limitless, and we will continue to demand divestment from the Israeli war machine," said Sara, a Camden Friends of Palestine campaigner.
Sara expressed that the council's measures designed to restrict pro-Palestine demonstrations reflect undemocratic and authoritarian tactics meant to evade accountability.
