Transport for London (TfL) will close Cutty Sark station from May 31 until spring next year to replace the escalators that have long been a source of frustration for commuters. The 4 million project aims to install new, energy-efficient escalators as the existing ones have repeatedly failed, often forcing passengers to either navigate 121 steps or use a poorly-rated lift. The complexity of the project stems from the original installation of the escalators being beneath the station. In the meantime, passengers are advised to use nearby Greenwich station and improved signage has been installed for better guidance.
Transport for London (TfL) has announced a significant station closure to replace outdated escalators, aiming to enhance commuter experience with new, energy-efficient replacements.
Campaigners have long called for the replacement of the Cutty Sark escalators, which have repeatedly malfunctioned, leading to frustrations among passengers who face steep stairs or an inadequate lift.
