After prolonged strike action, security guards at major London museums have achieved pay rises of 13% to 23%, starting October 2024. Represented by the United Voices of the World (UVW) union, these guards staged over 50 walkouts demanding better wages, successfully overcoming years of stagnant pay. Previously earning £11.95 hourly—below the London Living Wage (LLW)—the guards will now earn a base salary of £13.85, retroactive to April 1, 2024. This achievement emphasizes the power of collective action in confronting institutional pay disparities.
This victory shows what happens when workers stand united and refuse to be treated as second-class.
Since UVW submitted a pay claim in the fourth quarter of 2024, the guards have gained more ground than they had in the previous ten years combined.
