The Borough Triangle scheme has received narrow approval from Southwark Council for constructing 892 new homes, pending endorsement from the Mayor of London. The development plans include 77 intermediate homes and 153 at social rent, while the majority of homes will be sold at market rates. Local leaders express concern over the insufficient number of affordable homes amid a significant waiting list, urging intervention from Mayor Sadiq Khan. Council reports suggest potential viability issues of increasing affordable housing, but heritage concerns are also highlighted regarding the scheme's impact on the cultural landscape.
We said that we would keep fighting for affordable housing and standing up for local residents. For fewer than one in five homes to be available for social rent is simply unacceptable.
The quantum of affordable housing has been tested by the council's own viability assessor, and is considered to be the maximum that can be achieved on the site.
