Barnet, Enfield, Brent, Hackney and Lewisham joined the Coalition to End Gambling Ads (CEGA) to push for a ban on gambling and casino adverts across the Underground network. The Mayor has not implemented a ban and is waiting for a national Government framework. Gambling with Lives reports 2.7% of British adults suffer from problem gambling and estimates 117–496 gambling-related suicides per year, with young people particularly affected. Haringey ranks fourth in London for licensed gambling premises. More than 80 councils limit ads in spaces they control but have little sway over private billboards, transport, broadcast and online platforms. TfL earned £663,640 from gambling adverts between April 2022 and March 2023. The Betting and Gaming Council cites £2.2bn contribution to the London economy and 28,000 jobs, and the Government says research did not establish a causal link.
