Sadiq Khan maintains that the implementation of 20mph speed limits across London has not significantly slowed average bus speeds, which remain similar to pre-pandemic levels. Despite an increase in 20mph roads totalizing 264km as part of his Vision Zero strategy aimed at improving road safety, the Conservative faction in the London Assembly contends that these limits lead to delays that deter ridership and threaten bus service viability. Buses currently average 9.27 mph, with lower speeds noted in central areas, yet the mayor emphasizes other factors like junction delays impact journey times more.
The average bus speed in London in 2019-20 was 9.29 mph and in 2023-24 was very similar at 9.27 mph - a very small decline of 0.02.
As part of Sir Sadiq's Vision Zero strategy, Transport for London has increased the number of 20mph limits on roads it controls, resulting in around 264km under the speed cap.
City Hall Conservatives argue that the policy of lowering speed limits has caused unnecessary delays, making buses less attractive to Londoners and financially unviable for TfL.
Neil Garratt wrote to Sir Sadiq expressing concern about declining bus speeds and questioning whether lowering speed limits could be a contributing factor.
