Sadiq Khan approves extra 6m for Oxford Street pedestrianisation plans
"The Mayor has now approved the transfer of £6.29m from GLA Group reserves to cover the preparation costs for pedestrianising Oxford Street, and ongoing maintenance of the roads in the meantime."
"When the Mayor of London took control of the area around Oxford Street, it was done against the wishes of the Labour-controlled Westminster Council, who complained at the time that they had less than a week's notice of the Mayor's intentions. They later accepted the fait accompli and worked to support the measure."
The Mayor of London approved £6.29m transferred from GLA Group reserves to cover preparation costs for pedestrianising Oxford Street and ongoing road maintenance until the end of the year. Oxford Street and several side streets were designated as GLA Roads in September 2025, placing management under Transport for London rather than Westminster Council. Funding is required within the current financial year because project delivery is progressing faster than expected. The formal decision to pedestrianise has not yet been taken, so preparatory and design work is being carried out at risk. Westminster Council previously accepted the Mayor’s control of the area but, after returning to Conservative leadership, has indicated it will oppose the plans and seek legal advice.
