Residents of Balfron Tower in East London have endured nearly a week without functioning lifts, forcing those with mobility issues, including disabilities, to rely on stairs. This situation has left tenants feeling trapped and unsafe in the 26-storey building, leading to severe concerns about emergencies like fires. One resident, hindered by injury, has missed university lectures, while another with spinal injuries struggles to manage basic needs. Despite assurances from property management about lift restoration, the ongoing situation has created distress and fear among the residents.
Peter Yu expressed deep concerns for his safety and health, stating: “What if there is a fire? What if I have a heart attack? Who will come and get me? Lives are at stake here.”
Vasundhata Gupte explained her predicament, citing her injury: "I am coming back from recovery sessions for my leg, but I then have to walk up 15 flights of stairs so what is even the point in trying to fix it."
