Residents of Amesbury Avenue, Streatham, have vehemently opposed a £650,000 project aimed at replacing parking spaces with seating, fearing it will compromise local businesses and attract antisocial behavior. Community members blocked access to council workers twice, expressing concerns that fewer parking options would hurt business viability and create difficulties for customers. Local store owner Berhe Tsegay has stated the change would disrupt his launderette's operations, while long-term resident Tony McDermott questioned the wisdom of spending money on parklets when other community issues need addressing.
"If this project goes ahead, my business will be completely destroyed. We have customers from the local community. How are they going to carry their items if there's no parking for vehicles?"
"This is going to cost 650,000. It's a lot of money to spend especially when Lambeth Council are supposed to be skint. We've been asking them from day one to communicate with us and they have turned their back on us."
