Redbridge councillor who indecently exposed his genitals in Romford resigns
Briefly

Sam Gould, a Labour councillor for Hainault ward, resigned following his guilty plea to two charges of indecent exposure. Redbridge Council leader Kam Rai expressed support for legal reforms to enable councils to remove elected officials for serious crimes, as current law restricts action unless there's a significant prison sentence. Gould's actions on two separate occasions led to public outcry and Rai's call for immediate resignation. A by-election will be organized for his replacement, while local politicians express relief and support for the victims impacted by Gould's behaviour.
Upon learning of Mr Gould's offences, I called for his immediate resignation as a council member, and the council took prompt action to block his council devices and access cards.
I'm relieved he has now resigned from the council. The past week's revelations have been distressing, and my heart goes out to the victims for what they endured.
Unfortunately, we as a council do not have the power to remove a council member, even when they've committed such a serious offence. Our hands are effectively tied.
No one should have to endure this behaviour and I am grateful to the police for taking swift action.
