Due to a technical glitch in Transport for London's (TfL) licensing system, private-hire drivers are experiencing significant delays in their licence renewals. This has led to severe financial hardship, including homelessness for some drivers like Abdullahi, who applied for renewal well in advance. The App Drivers and Couriers' Union (ADCU) reported an uptick in distress calls, urging TfL to issue temporary licenses while the backlog is sorted. Despite TfL's apology and awareness of the situation, many drivers feel neglected as they struggle to maintain their livelihoods and support their families.
This is our livelihoods, it's how we support our families, and without the income from driving, I was unable to keep up with my rent payments.
The ADCU has been receiving more than 200 calls per day from desperate drivers facing financial hardship due to delayed licensing renewals.
