Rainham Bowls Club, established in 1976, is in a precarious situation as it prepares to mark its 50th anniversary. President Ray Bell fears that a proposed rent increase by the council, raising annual costs to approximately £18,000, could lead to the club's closure. With limited financial resources and a community of elderly members relying on the club for social interaction, the club submitted a counter-proposal of £3,250 for annual rent. Secretary Ken Morgan emphasized that although this would still be challenging, it would allow the club to continue functioning as a crucial meeting point for its members.
Ray Bell expressed deep concern over the council's hefty rent increase, warning that if accepted, the club could face closure, which would devastate its members.
Ken Morgan highlighted the importance of the club as a community hub, stating that for many locals, it is a vital social outlet amidst loneliness.
